RAFFINATE III A80

Raffinate 3:

Aromatic hydrocarbons are important starting materials in the chemical industry required for the production of dyes, plastics, and pharmaceuticals. Apart from that, up to 10% by volume of aromatics, especially the so-called BTX aromatics benzene, toluene, and xylene, are added to the gasoline to increase the quality. In the petrochemical industry, aromatics, in particular, the BTX aromatics already mentioned, are obtained from certain petroleum fractions. Due to the slight difference in the boiling points of aromatics and non-aromatics in these petroleum fractions, it is not possible to separate the aromatics by distillation, which is why they are obtained by means of extraction that results in the raffinate.

Extraction and raffinate

During an extraction, one or more substances are extracted from a mixture of substances, the so-called extraction material, using suitable liquid solvents as extraction agents. The substance that is extracted with the help of the solvent is also called raffinate. If the extraction material is solid, the process is referred to as solid-liquid extraction. The extraction of a substance from a liquid mixture is called liquid-liquid extraction.

The aim of extraction is either to remove impurities or to extract those substances that are to be processed into products. All other substances present in the extraction material should not be dissolved. In particular, in the case of liquid-liquid extraction, the starting solvent must not be miscible with the solvent used for the extraction. Therefore, the solubility of the extract in the selected solvent must be higher than the solubility of all other components of the mixture. Such solvents are referred to as having a selective effect or as selective solvents.

The extraction procedure usually consists of three steps:

  • Addition of the selective solvent and intensive mixing of both phases, e.g., by shaking
  • Waiting until the two phases (extraction agent and starting solvent) have separated and the extraction agent in which the extract is dissolved is removed. What remains is the so-called raffinate, the starting solvent freed from the extract
  • Obtaining the extract from the extractant, for example by distillation separation3
